SPACE Therapy: A Supportive Approach for Childhood Anxiety & OCD

By Cassidy Thind
Supporting a child who experiences anxiety or obsessive-compulsive behaviors can feel overwhelming for families. Many parents find themselves offering reassurance, avoiding certain situations, adjusting family routines, or stepping in quickly to ease distress. While these responses are caring and protective, they can unintentionally reinforce the cycle of anxiety and maintain the behaviours long-term.
SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) is an evidence-based treatment model designed to shift that pattern. Instead of focusing on changing the child’s behaviour directly, SPACE works with the parents to create change through supportive, structured, and gradual adjustments at home, implemented by the parent through their relationship with the child.
What is SPACE?
Developed at the Yale Child Study Center, SPACE is a parent-based treatment model that focuses on reducing accommodations, which are the adjustments parents make to help a child avoid anxiety triggers or compulsive distress.
Accommodations may include:
● Offering repeated reassurance
● Participating in or supporting compulsive rituals
● Avoiding certain places, activities, or tasks
● Sleeping beside a child or staying physically close to prevent distress
● Speaking on behalf of a child in social situations
These behaviors are understandable and compassionate attempts to help. Over time, however, they can unintentionally send the message: “You can’t handle this on your own.” SPACE helps shift this message to: “I believe in your ability to cope, and I am here to support you.”
Who is SPACE for?
SPACE is designed for children and youth experiencing:
● Generalized Anxiety
● Separation Anxiety
● Social Anxiety
● School Avoidance or Refusal
● Specific Phobias
● Selective Mutism
● Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
SPACE and OCD
For children with OCD, parents are often drawn into reassurance loops or rituals to reduce distress. This is known as family accommodation, and research shows it plays a major role in maintaining OCD symptoms. SPACE provides parents with structured tools to reduce participation in these rituals while remaining emotionally supportive.
How SPACE Works
- Identify Accommodations: Look at how anxiety or OCD is influencing daily routines, interactions, and habits at home.
- Choose One Accommodation to Reduce: Change begins with one small, clearly defined shift to keep the process manageable.
- Introduce Supportive Communication: Parents learn to validate emotions while expressing confidence in the child’s ability to cope.
- Gradual Implementation: The selected accommodation is reduced step-by-step with guidance and support.
- Expand Progress Over Time: Once the initial change stabilizes, the process is applied to additional accommodations to build lasting resilience.

● Reduces family stress and conflict around anxiety
● Strengthens the parent-child connection
● Helps parents feel supported and more effective
