Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

EFT is an attachment-based therapy that looks at the emotional patterns couples get stuck in, and helps partners feel safe and close again. It’s offered here by Cassidy Thind, RCC, CCC, online across BC and Alberta.

Who EFT may help

EFT is used with couples, individuals and families.

How EFT works

EFT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and Dr. Les Greenberg, and is one of the most studied approaches to couples therapy. Instead of focusing on who’s right, EFT looks at the pattern between you, like one partner pushing for connection while the other pulls away. Your counsellor helps you each notice the feelings underneath, so you can reach for each other in a new way.

Ways EFT is used

EFT for individuals

Uses the same ideas to work with attachment wounds and relationship patterns on your own.

EFT · EFIT

No. EFIT is the version for individuals, and EFFT is for families. Both use the same ideas about attachment and emotion.

Both are well-known couples approaches. Gottman focuses more on skills and research-based habits; EFT focuses more on the emotional bond and the cycle between partners. Many counsellors draw on both.
