Child and youth counselling is a truly special form of therapy that focuses on helping young people navigate the unique challenges of growing up. We believe that counselling can make a significant and positive difference in their lives. It can provide a safe, objective
and confidential space for them to express their feelings and understand their issues with the support of a qualified and empathetic counsellor.
We provide a safe and supportive environment where children and teens can explore their feelings, work through difficult issues, and learn new coping strategies. Whether it's overcoming anxiety or depression, managing stress, or improving relationships with family and friends, child and youth counselling is designed to help young people become more resilient, confident, and happy.
Confidentiality is a key component of counselling for children and youth. We respect that it can be difficult for children to open up and share their feelings and experiences, especially if they fear it might be shared with others. That’s why we take confidentiality very seriously. We ensure that what is shared in sessions remains strictly between the child and their counselor. We will only break confidentiality in rare cases where there is a serious risk of harm to the child or someone else.
We also recognize that involving families can be an important part of the counselling process. While confidentiality is vital, it is important for caring families to be aware of what their child is going through and how they can support them. Our counsellors will work with both the child and their family to determine the best approach to involve them in the counselling process. This can involve regular check-ins with parents or guardians, family therapy sessions, and/or sharing strategies and language to implement at home.
The benefits of counselling are numerous. Counselling can help children develop better coping skills, build their emotional expression and communication, increase self-esteem and confidence and improve relationships with peers and family. As children and youth grow and develop, they may face a variety of challenges that can impact their mental health and well-being. Counselling can be a valuable tool in helping children and youth overcome these challenges and develop the skills they need to thrive.
We aim to provide a safe, non-judgmental space for young people to explore their thoughts and emotions, counselling can help them feel heard, understood, and supported. This alone can make a world of difference, especially for those who may feel alone or isolated in their struggles.
We also help children and youth learn new skills and strategies for managing difficult emotions and stressors. Through counselling, young people can gain valuable insights into their thoughts and behaviors, and develop effective coping mechanisms that they can use throughout their lives.
One of the most powerful benefits of counselling for youth mental health is its ability to promote resilience. By helping young people build the skills and strategies they need to bounce back from adversity, counselling can provide them with a powerful tool for navigating life's challenges with confidence and grace.
healthy, and fulfilling lives.
Counselling can also be an effective tool for improving communication between young people and their parents. By providing a safe and supportive space where both parties can express themselves openly and honestly, counselling can help to address misunderstandings, improve relationships, and promote healthier communication patterns.
For example, we may help a young person and their caregiver to develop active listening skills, which can help them better understand each other's perspectives and communicate more effectively.
Counselling can also help parents to better understand their child's emotions and behaviors, and provide them with tools and strategies for supporting their child's mental health and well-being.
In addition to improving communication between youth and parents, counselling can also be helpful for improving communication within families as a whole.
Family counselling sessions can provide an opportunity for families to come together to address issues such as conflicts, transitions, and other challenges that may be affecting their relationships.
Overall, counselling can be an incredibly valuable tool for promoting healthy communication and relationships between young people and their parents, as well as within families as a whole. By providing a safe and supportive space where everyone's voice can be heard and respected, counselling can help to promote greater understanding, empathy, and connection.
Counselling can assist and support in issues such as:
Anxiety and depression: Counselling can help assess these common mental health concerns and help develop coping strategies and build resilience. Through talk therapy, play therapy and other unique approaches, our counsellors can help children and youth feel more empowered and in control of their emotions.
Trauma: Counselling can help children and youth process their experiences and develop healthy strategies to manage the impact of trauma. This may include techniques such as cognitive-behavioral
therapy (CBT) or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).
Family Conflict: Family conflict, particularly separation and divorce, can be particularly difficult for children and youth to navigate on their own. Counselling can provide a safe and neutral space for them to express their feelings and concerns, and work toward resolution.
Behavioral Issues: Behavioral issues, such as anger management or impulse control, can have a significant impact on a child’s ability to function and thrive. Counselling can help children and youth
develop the skills they need to manage their behavior, communicate effectively, and make healthy choices.
Grief and Loss: Grief and loss can be especially difficult for children and youth to work through. In counselling they can find a supportive and compassionate space to process their experience and find ways to honor and remember their loved one.
Identity and Self-Discovery: Throughout development, children and youth may have questions about
their identity and place in the world. Counselling provides a non-judgmental and respectful environment to explore thoughts and feelings and find their own sense of identity.
The heart of our counselling is the belief that every child and youth deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential.
