FAQ

  • How do I choose a counsellor? Look at who each counsellor works with and what they focus on, then trust your gut. The fit between you matters more than anything else. Many offer a free 20-minute consult, which is a low-pressure way to see how it feels.
  • How do I book? Contact the counsellor you’d like to see through their profile. Most have online booking; you can also email them directly. → Counsellors
  • What happens in the first session? It’s mostly about getting to know you: what’s bringing you in, what you’ve tried, and what you’d like to feel different. You choose how much to share.
  • Do I need a referral? No. You can contact any counsellor directly.
Who do counsellors here work with? Adults, couples and youth ages 11 and up, depending on the counsellor. Each profile lists who they see.
  • How much does counselling cost? Each counsellor sets their own fees, which are listed on their profile. Some offer a sliding scale.
  • Is counselling covered by my benefits? Many extended health plans cover Registered Clinical Counsellors (RCC), Registered Social Workers (RSW) and Registered Psychologists. Plans vary in which titles they cover and how much, so check yours. Counselling isn’t covered by MSP.
  • Do you direct bill? Some counsellors direct bill certain programs. Ask your counsellor; otherwise you pay at the session and receive a receipt to submit.
  • What if I need to cancel? Each counsellor has their own cancellation policy, usually requiring 24 hours’ notice. Your counsellor will share theirs before your first session.
  • How long is a session? Most are 50 minutes. Some counsellors also offer longer 80 minute sessions.
  • How often will we meet? Often weekly or every other week to start, then less often as things settle. You and your counsellor decide together.
  • Can I do counselling online? Yes. Most counsellors offer secure video sessions anywhere in BC, and several in Alberta. Each profile says where they can see clients.
  • Where is the office? 201 – 375 Laurier Street, Invermere, on the second floor (stairs only). → Locations
  • Is what I say confidential? Yes, with a few legal exceptions, such as a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, or a court order. Your counsellor will explain these at the start.
  • Do counsellors here share information with each other? No. Each counsellor practises independently and keeps their own records. Information is only shared with your written consent.
  • What if I need help right away? Counsellors here don’t offer crisis services, and email and booking aren’t monitored for emergencies. Call or text 9-8-8 any time, call 911, or go to your nearest emergency department.
  • Is Hearthstone one clinic? Hearthstone is a shared space for independent practitioners. Each counsellor runs their own practice and is responsible for their own services, records and fees.
  • Do you offer assessments? Yes. Alana Cotterall, Registered Psychologist, offers ADHD, psychoeducational and psychological assessments, and Victoria Cory, RCC, offers gender-affirming readiness assessments. → Assessments
  • I’m a counsellor. Can I practise at Hearthstone? Hearthstone occasionally has room for registered counsellors who share its values and want to run their own independent practice alongside others. If you’re interested, send a short note about your background through the contact page.
